In order to win the Bone Race, a complete dinosaur skeleton must be returned to the new museum that he is building in New York by the allotted day, which ends the contest. Some of the characters in the novel include an evil ex-confederate army officer, a gregarious circus owner, an intelligent woman paleontologist from England, two fiercely competitive university professors, a Chinese underworld boss, an Oglalla-Sioux Indian chief, and an amateur bone digger who uses a Civil War observation balloon to aid his excavations. “The Bone Race, A Quest for Dinosaur Fossils” is a unique book because it is the first of its kind to be set amongst the fascinating and colorful period of American paleontology when dinosaur mania began to take hold in America. Parts of the story were inspired by real historical events, and the afterword of the book offers a true account of the people and events that some of the characters and situations presented in the story were based on, along with the real contributions they made to the science of paleontology.
